The Science
Photobiomodulation (PBMT) Therapy is a non-thermal, non-invasive light therapy that utilises specific wavelengths of visible (400-700 nm) and near-infrared (100-1100 nm) light to elicit therapeutic biological responses at the cellular level.
PBM's primary photoreceptor is cytochrome c oxidase, a key enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. When this chromophore absorbs light photons, it triggers increased production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cell's energy currency. Simultaneously, it promotes the release of nitric oxide (NO) -a vasodilator that enhances microcirculation-and reactive oxygen species (ROS), which modulate intracellular signalling.
These effects lead to:
- Enhanced cellular metabolism and repair
- Modulation of inflammation
- Reduction of oxidative stress
- Improved tissue oxygenation
- Acceleration of wound healing and regeneration
PBMT has been widely studied for its ability to reduce pain, inflammation, and edema in both acute and chronic conditions. It supports neuroregeneration, soft tissue repair, and modulation of immune responses, making it a valuable adjunct in both conventional and integrative veterinary medicine.
